Why is the current medical system failing to treat chronic disease?

  1. Our modern diet and lifestyle are out of alignment with our genes and our biology. We are not paying enough attention to our health, and WE ARE FOCUSED on treating symptoms and NOT the cause of our health issues

2. The biggest challenge we face today is not acute disease but chronic disease, and our medical system is not set up to tackle chronic disease. If you have an accident or an injury the hospital is the first place you should go. If you have a chronic illness, you need to take a good hard look at your lifestyle and your environment.

3. Our model for delivering health care doesn’t support the top five interventions that would have the most significant impact on preventing and reversing chronic disease like diet, sleep, stress management, physical activity, and social connection. When was the last time your doctor asked you about your lifestyle?

What is Health Coaching?

Without a vision, resources, motivation, and support many of our goals can seem out of reach. Health coaching is “a collaborative conversation style for strengthening a person’s motivation and commitment to healthy behaviour change."

Why do we struggle to do what it takes to say healthy?

In short, making health behaviour change is not easy. About 40% of the actions we perform every day aren’t due to the decisions we make but are down to habit. When we don’t understand the power of habit, we try to change through sheer willpower alone.

Willpower is an extremely limited resource, so this strategy is destined to fail, and each time it does, we lose confidence and become more discouraged until we lose hope completely.

I’m currently in the pre-practicum stage of an ADAPT Health Coaching course at the Kresser Institute.
