Eat Like a King: Why Most Men in Midlife Are Under-Fuelled

Most men in midlife think their problem is aging. That slow drop in energy. The softness around the midsection. The workouts that don’t hit like they used to. But what if it’s not aging at all? What if your body’s just missing the one thing it truly needs to rebuild itself....

The Midlife Disconnect

Every week, I speak with men who tell me the same thing:

“I’m training hard. I’m eating well. But I’m still tired, I’ve lost my edge, and I can’t shift the gut.”

They think they need a new training program, a detox, or to cut more calories. But in most cases, the problem isn’t training, it’s under-fueling.

Your body is made of protein: muscle, enzymes, hormones, immune cells, neurotransmitters, everything. Yet, most men in midlife don’t eat (or absorb) nearly enough. They live in a constant state of repair debt, breaking down faster than they rebuild.

Why This Happens

After 40, things start to shift:

  • Stomach acid and digestive enzymes decline (making protein harder to absorb).

  • Hormone levels drop.

  • Recovery slows.

  • And metabolism becomes less forgiving.

If you’re skipping meals, cutting calories, or living on caffeine, your body has no choice but to steal amino acids from your muscle tissue to keep essential systems running. That’s why you can train 5 days a week and still lose strength, energy, and motivation.

Protein Beyond Muscle

When men hear “protein,” they think muscle. But muscle is just the beginning.

Protein is:

  • The building block of your bones, organs, and skin

  • The raw material for neurotransmitters that control mood and focus

  • The structure for hair, nails, and connective tissue

  • The driver of detoxification and immune defence

So when protein intake or digestion drops, you don’t just lose muscle, you lose resilience.

You feel fat, flat, foggy, and fatigued, not because you’re getting old, but because your cells are underfed.

Why “Calories and Macros” Aren’t Enough

A lot of men track calories and think they’re covered. But you can hit your macros and still miss what matters, the quality and completeness of your protein.

If your diet doesn’t supply the full range of essential amino acids, your body can’t build or repair efficiently.

That’s why Protein Beyond Muscle, the first module inside the new Eat Like a King course, goes deeper than “just hit your protein target.

We cover:

  • How protein is digested and absorbed (and why this matters in midlife)

  • The difference between complete and incomplete proteins

  • How to hit the leucine threshold for muscle growth

  • Why digestion, not just intake, determines how much your body can actually use

  • How protein supports bone density, hormone balance, and detoxification

It’s not about eating more — it’s about eating smarter.

Why I Built Eat Like a King

I built Eat Like a King to help men in midlife simplify nutrition, to understand what their body actually needs, without the noise, fads, or restrictive diets.

We start with protein because it’s primary, the foundation on which everything else depends. Each week, I’ll be adding new lessons that cover energy, metabolism, hormones, longevity, and more.

If you’re a man in midlife who’s:

  • Feeling flat despite training

  • Struggling with strength, recovery, or motivation

  • Or wants to eat in a way that supports long-term energy and vitality
